As a whole 2012 saw weakening demand, softer newbuild prices, falling per diem lease rates for reefer container equipment and much lower freight rates.This was despite trade in perishable products holding up better than for dry freight cargo, the withdrawal from the market of several specialised reefer ships and a supposed gain in market share by maritime service providers at the expense of the air cargo industry.It suggests that 2013 will be a challenging year for all of those involved in the sector, depending, that is, on the extent of any global economic recovery and the success with which beginning of the year freight rate increases hold.
