The role of freight forwarders in the container shipping industry can be blurred. Are they in the same camp as shippers, battling with lines for more efficient ocean transport, or on the side of carriers in trying to develop world-class logistics services? Either way, they are in a privileged position in being able to see what needs to be done, and the head of the world's largest forwarder, K+N chairman Karl Gernandt, has some harsh words for container lines in this month's View from the Bridge interview. In particular, he castigates carriers for failing to achieve acceptable reliability.
