After meeting with President Barack Obama's leading energy advisor John Podesta along with eight other Democratic senators, US senator Al Franken (D-MN) commented on July 24 that he believes the final 2014 RFS issued by the EPA will call for higher mandated biofuels blending. "I believe these numbers are going to be bigger, based not only on my conversations with Podesta, but my conversations with EPA administrator Gina McCarthy." The proposed 2014 RFS issued by the EPA last Nov. called for 15.21B gal (992K b/d) of biofuels to be blended into the US transportation fuel pool. This 15.21B gal (992K b/d) figure would include 2.2B gal (143.5K b/d) of advanced biofuels, 17MM gal (1.11K b/d) of cellulosic biofuels, and 1.28B gal (83.5K b/d) of biodiesel. Franken and the other Democratic senators said the US biodiesel industry produced 1.8B gal (117.4K b/d) of the renewable fuel last year and that this is what the mandated blend level should be under the 2014 RFS. The National Biodiesel Board had commented in May that it anticipates the 1.28B gal (83.5K b/d) mandate to remain the same under the final 2014 RFS.
