Sources say that the Clean Fuels Program 2, which was first announced in South Africa in 2012, has been delayed until 2020. The delay allows the country's refiners some breathing room before they must complete substantial (and costly) upgrades to their facilities. In the meantime, the country's economy is waiting for a number of benefits that are expected to result from the program; besides improving the quality of the country's air, improving the country's fuel from the Euro-2 standard it currently meets is expected to protect jobs in in the refining and automotive sectors, as well as promote overseas trade. One of the ways it will do this is by removing obstacles to the importation of foreign cars; at present, modern cars cannot be used in South Africa unless they are modified to downgrade their emissions control systems so that they can accept low-quality fuel without causing engine damage.
