DSM Japan Looks to Expand PPS Business for Use in Next-Gen Cars

DSM Japan KK is working to grow its business for polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), with its sights set mostly on applications in next-gen eco-friendly cars. Specifically, the company is pursuing market development in response to three major systems: (1) heat management systems amid the shift to electric vehicles (EVs), (2) high voltage systems and (3) fuel cell systems. With EVs and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) expected to make up around 30 percent of automotive production by 2030, the different ways in which these vehicles are powered means that there will also be changes to what materials are used. For example, while a car powered by an internal combustion engine will use around 40 kilograms of engineering plastics, an EV will use approximately 45 kilograms, marking around a 15 percent increase. An FCV, meanwhile, will use about 50 kilograms of engineering plastics – 25 percent more than a traditional vehicle. PPS in particular has characteristics well suited to the upcoming new technologies, and so is expected to find over 10 times more use in EVs and FCVs than in conventional vehicles.
