Real and virtual issues in optometry.

Scientific journals come in all sizes and forms. Most still come in the printed format but the number of e-journals is increasing and many, including Clinical and Experimental Optomelty, are now available in both formats. Clinical and Experimental Optometry is still delivered to your door in a hard copy that you can handle and read in any environment. It is also available online and viewing online might become the method of choice for updating scientific and clinical information. In recent years, there have been many improvements to our journal. In 1999, we introduced the first of our 'special issues', in which we invite scientists and clinicians with special knowledge to contribute on a current topic, which is of particular interest and importance to our readers and our profession. The first of these 'special issues' was on diabetes mellitus and it has been followed by 12 more 'special issues' on important and wide-ranging topics.
