Cloud Peak sees its 2009 earnings go up despite production going down nearly 3 million tons during the year

Cloud Peak Energy generated some record earnings in 2009 despite a decrease in the in the amount of coal the company sold. Colin Marshall, president and CEO of Cloud Peak, said income for the year was 182 million dollars in 2009, up from 88 million dollars in 2008, despite a 2.8 million ton decrease in the amount of coal produced by the company's three mines. Marshall said the production slump was a direct result of the economic downturn that plagued the U.S. in 2009.
