The one-satisfaction rule, which allows a plaintiff to recover only once for a single injury, bars a copyright infringement plaintiff from recovering the full amount of actual damages from the infringer when some of those damages have already been paid to a copyright owner in pre-judgment settlements, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled Feb. 25 (BUC International Corp. v. International Yacht Council Ltd., 11th Cir., No. 05-16151, 2/25/08). Reversing a federal district court's refusal to reduce the damages, the court concluded that the defendants' motion did not amount to a "contribution" claim, which is not provided for under the Copyright Act.
