摘要

A building contractor has been ordered to pay £182,790 in fines and costs after a reversing van ran over and killed a painter on a paved area outside an Odeon cinema. The incident occurred on 27 July 2010 during a five-week fit-out of a new Costa coffee shop in the cinema's foyer in Ashton-on-Ribble, Lancashire. The work - which was carried out in two phases and was planned and managed by EMC Contracts - took place during the school summer holidays. The first phase moved the box office to make way for the Costa shop; the incident occurred during the second phase, which involved installing the shop. On the day of the incident, an EMC employee unloaded construction materials from his van and was reversing to park outside the cinema when his van hit Carl Green, another EMC employee, who was crossing behind.
