UK Wood Recycling, which produces wood chips for a biomass power station, has been fined ￡200,000 after a shovel loader hit and killed an employee at its site in Redcar. The company had not segregated vehicles from pedestrians and had simply relied on workers wearing high-visibility clothing, and pedestrians and drivers making eye contact. Raymond Burns worked at the site as a load inspector, which involved deciding whether deliveries of wood to the site were suitable for use and rejecting them if they were too contaminated. On 19 December 2008, he was carrying some plastic rubbish from a large wood pile to a nearby waste skip when the shovel loader, which was moving material around the site, struck him.
