Construction employers are being urged to adopt "smart" technology as part of an effort to reduce the use of fake skills certification cards in the industry. The call from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) follows a report commissioned by the two bodies on the extent of card scheme fraud and card checking procedures on UK construction sites. Employers, advises the CITB and CSCS, "need to be confident that if they are shown a card it is legitimate and that the person showing it has the appropriate qualifications to be carrying out their job on site". The report, from Ask for Research, has also been welcomed by the construction union, UCATT, whose acting general secretary, Brian Rye, said the findings showed "the need for vigilance on site around CSCS cards... Having certainty that workers are fully competent and have the right card for the work they are undertaking is a major factor in improving construction safety."
