A London hotelier who ignored basic fire safety requirements has received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, a £200,000 fine and costs of £29,922. In 2011, a routine inspection by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) of the six floor, 18-room Radnor Hotel in Bayswater found serious failures in the hotel's fire prevention, detection, containment and escape provisions. The shortcomings included inadequate emergency lighting, fire doors that were either missing or tied open with extension cords or string, and evidence that the basement store room had been used for sleeping. LFB officers served an enforcement notice requiring the hotel's owner, Salim Patel, to rectify the deficiencies, but follow-up visits found that he had taken no action to comply and that the hotel continued to operate without a working fire detection system. The LFB therefore decided to prosecute.
