From boom to bust: is the Irish experience relevant to the UK?

A new report from the Dublin-based Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has concluded that injury and ill health rates rose during Ireland's economic boom (2001-07) and fell during its recession (2008-12) (see figure 1). The ESRI also found that: annual inspection rates were positively associated with lower levels of injury and ill health; newly recruited workers were four times more likely to sustain injuries than those who had been in a job for longer than five years; and highly variable working hours were linked to higher rates of injury and illness.
