A major food retailer, wholesaler and distributor has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £608,625 after a supplier's delivery driver was killed by a gate that fell when a hinge bracket failed. The company, AF Blakemore and Son, had neither properly maintained nor inspected the gate at its cash and carry site in Newport for seven years, despite advice that it was in poor condition. The fine alone represents 5.5% of the most recent annual pre-tax profits made by the company, whose business includes 300 SPAR stores.
