Care home fall. Caring Homes Healthcare Group has been fined £450,000, with £14,762 costs, for failures that led to an 87-year-old resident falling to her death at its Coppice Lea nursing home in Surrey. The incident occurred on 3 October 2013 after the resident, who had dementia, fell four metres from her first floor bedroom window. The HSEfound that the window restrictor was easily overridden and therefore not fit for purpose. Rebekah Dunn, an HSE inspector, said: "All windows that are large enough for people to fall through should be restrained sufficiently to prevent such falls. The 100mm benchmark should only be allowed to disengage using a special tool or key." Caring Homes Healthcare Group was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on 7 |une, after it pleaded guilty to exposing non-employees to risks from its undertaking (s.3(1) of the HSW Act). The company, which is part of the Myriad Healthcare group, operates 60 homes with 3,000 beds in the south of England. In the year to 31 March 2016, it made a pre-tax loss of £8,810,000 on a turnover of £93,094,000.
