It has been over 10 years since I set up my first clinic for men in a pub in the West Midlands while working as a public health nurse. I was completely blown away by the response we had to this service, with over 100 men turning up for a free health check during a Wednesday lunchtime in a rundown pub in Walsall.Even more surprisingly, it was not the usual suspects who turn up at the GP's anyway, but men who would not normally access any services until their heath risks had become critical. Over 72% of the men seen at this first pub surgery had one or more undetected health risk that may have become far more serious and in some cases even fatal if left untreated.
