Weighing up the SEF.

In response to the limited evidence of the effectiveness of weight management interventions and the need for methodologically sound evaluation1-2 the National Obesity Observatory (NOO) has developed a Standard Evaluation Framework (SEF) that can be used to structure the evaluation of weight management programmes.3 As part of the continuing quality improvement process of the SEF, this case study discusses the application of this framework during an evaluation study carried out by the University of Worcester on behalf of the Department of Health West Midlands.This evaluation represents the first application of the SEF at a regional rather than a programme level, and it included seven family-based intervention programmes in place in the West Midlands between 1 July 2007 and 1 July 2009 (see Box 1).
