Slovenia is situated south of Austria, and west of Hungary. It was previously part of Yugoslavia, and gained independence in 1991. It is a democratic parliamentary republic and a member of NATO. The population is just over 2 million (including 285,000 5-19 year olds), spread equally between the countryside and towns. School health nurses are employed around the world as health screeners, educators and promoters, and an evidence-based approach is increasingly being followed. The conference brought together school nurses from Europe, Middle East, USA, Canada, Thailand, Japan, China and Australia.
