In September 2012 the Department of Health in England published a report by Chief Nursing Officer, Jane Cummings (pictured), entitled Developing the culture of compassionate care: creating a new vision for nurses, midwives and care-givers. The strategy was put together in response to substantial media coverage describing failings of care in NHS settings including Winterbourne View and Mid-Staffordshire Foundation Trust. It is described by the DH as 'an opportunity to help create a new strategy for nursing, midwifery and care-giving that embeds a culture of compassionate care'. The report sets out the government's vision for the future of nursing and midwifery, where patients are 'looked after with care and compassion, by a professional who is competent and communicates well'. In its introduction, the report outlines six fundamental values that should be adopted by all NHS professionals when providing services. These are the 6 c's.
