Farmers in rural communities in India and Nepal practice innovative ways to manage their resources of water. Many of these practices are traditional ones, but the benefits are rarely scientifically verified and do not travel beyond their original village or community. If they do, they have the power to transform the quality of life for many. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has evaluated some of these practices in a project funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) U.K.
