French feed mills cut energy costs and emissions: French feed mills share creative ways to become more sustainable

In March, about 160 feed industry leaders from all over France made the journey to the French city of Nantes to participate in the annual symposium on sustainable development, arranged by France's technical centre for feed research, Tecaliman. Their presence at the meeting represented a triumph for the idea of launching collective brainstorming discussions on priorities and possible measures. At the gathering, the centre was officially handed the mission of coordinating the actions on sustainable development by the three French feed manufacturers' associations: AFCA-Cial for premixers, SNIA for the private sector, and Coop de France for the cooperatives. Tecaliman will share this mission nationally with another collective structure, a scientific council known as CSNA. This is not to suggest that nothing has been done before. To the contrary, the research centre began looking in detail at the energy costs incurred by feed plants as far back as 1985.
