PRESSURE IS MOUNTING ON A NEW GENERATION OF MOTOR TECHNOLOGIES, EACH WITH ITS OWN SET OF CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME. Despite the short-term diversity of its phased introduction, powertrain electrification could offer an unprecedented chance to standardize. Internal combustion engines have never coalesced around a single solution, using different fuel solutions, piston counts, layouts and aspiration technologies depending on the application. But as the auto industry quickly moves toward a single form of propulsion - even for hydrogen fuel cells -could that variability disappear? Market trends suggest it's feasible. In the recent Materials for Electric Vehicles 2020-2030 report, IDTechEx research shows that 82% of all electric cars sold in 2019 were using permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), and that share is rising. Report author, senior technology analyst Dr James Edmondson, is projecting it will edge even higher as OEMs prioritize efficiency, despite the technology's relatively high cost.
