Few chips have caused such a stir as the Pentium, and not always for the right reasons. First there was the great legal battle over the name '586'. US courts ruled that Intel did not have sole rights to the tag, leaving rivals like Nexgen free to release the Nx586. So, the moniker Intel Pentium Processor was born. The original 60 and 66MHz Pentiums were late. They were announced in March 1993, but even when Intel had launched them they were still largely vapourware and getting hold of one to buy was not easy.
