Faster than the wind

Harnessing the power of the wind has led to several false starts over recent years. This is surprising in view of the fact that wind is free, is available much of the time, and has been the focus of high-powered research in the field of international yacht racing,Yachts participating in the Americas Cup, notes Lloyd's Register (LR) in a recent paper on wind-power for commercial ships, actually sail faster than the wind. Katharine Palmer, LR's environmental manager; says that 'applying new knowledge to an old technology' offers significant potential. She estimates that wind could provide up to 50% of propulsive thrust for a bulk carrier; saving 30% in fuel bills.
