Enhancement hatcheries both praised and blamed in aftermath of california salmon crisis

Many eyes are on California to see how the state manages the coast's current chinook and coho salmon crisis, perhaps with the aid of the six or so state salmon hatcheries on the regions rivers. A spokesperson for the state Department of Fish and Game(CDF&G) said recently that it's thought all will be well again in 2010, but the agency isn't quite sure about 2009 yet. Salmon hatcheries in general and the state's facilities in particular have been under intensifying scrutiny in recent years, and suggestions have been made that they have inadvertently contributed to the continuing decline of numerous salmon runs in the state this year.
