The National Prawn Company (NPC) of Saudi Arabia is nothing if not ambitious. in 2006, based on developmental research over the previous two decades, the company completed phase one of a massive multi-phase aquaculture program projected at the time tocost some 350 million dollar (USD). It spent roughly 250 million dollar to install ten large shrimp farms each with ten ponds of ten hectares, along the eastern bank of the Red Sea. Now the company is planning to move ahead with phase two, which includes an additional 15 shrimp farms of similar size in the same sun-scorched desert area.
