An Alternative Hatchery Business Model: Free Fry! The need for new approaches to the hatchery business

This article is for brain-storming purposes only and is die product of some thinking I did after reading the very interesting book by Chris Anderson, "Free: The Future of a Radical Price," published by Hyperion in July, 2009. When I ask myself if hatcheries need to change their current business model my answer is that I don't really think so; Hatcheries should concentrate on producing quality fry at low costs, with more emphasis on quality, especially in hatcheries that are part of vertically integrated companies. However, I think that it is not a bad idea to explore different alternative business models as different companies face specific market challenges and the benefits from each model are very much context-specific.
