Progressive Water Use Strategies for Public Aquaculture

The one thing all aquaculture facilities depend on is a good quality source of water to carry oxygen to the fish and to carry waste products away from the fish. However, as demand for good quality water is increasing, its avaUability is ever-diminishing owing to drought, competing demand on aquifers, source water contamination, or pathogen concerns. Gone are the days when growth or improvement in an aquaculture faculty is achieved by using more water. For the majority of land-based fish farms and hatcheries more water simply isn't an option anymore. Public aquaculture facilities are faced with the challenges of growing to meet demand, improving sustainabihty, and maintaining economic viability through minimizing costs. As we address these challenges today and in the future, it is important to scrutinize how we use our most valuable resource and develop progressive strategies for optimizing water use.
