A US hatchery manager says he's become an advocate of introducing a little copper into the incubator unit to prevent the development of water mould during egg development. And Al Barney, who manages a hatchery in Washington state, on the west coast ofNorth America, said that apart from benefits for the eggs there's also the added benefit of a reduction in the number of headaches staff get from using chemicals such as formalin in the system. Barney, who has been working in salmon hatcheries since 1987, said that the hatcheries started using formalin in the incubator units after Malachite Green was banned for use in facilities raising fish for food. "They both are toxic substances," Barney said, "and I decided to initiate a personal research projectto find something effective, cheap, readily available, non-toxic and not resulting in toxic fumes to the environment."
