Mutlu et al. (2005) presented new data on the Saphane alunite deposit in western Anatolia, Turkey. The present discussion is intended both to complement their paper, incorporating in a comparison with the Saplica deposit, a larger alunite deposit in Turkey, as well as pointing out a number of problems with certain statements and interpretations made by Mutlu et al. Mutlu et al. (2005) claim that another alunite occurrence is found at Saplica, at Sebinkarahisar-Gir-esun, NE Anatolia, citing only the fairly recent work of Ozgenc (1993). However, the Saphca alunite occurrences have been known for about 500 years, and the deposits have been successfully exploited for many years (Tolun, 1947; Tuncali, 1974). Moreover, the mineralogy, alteration chemistry and mode of occurrence of this important deposit were studied in detail by Karakaya and Karakaya (2001a,b). Other significant Turkish alunite-minamiite occurrences are found at towns of Doganbey and Sadiklar, situated SSW of Konya in central Anatolia, and were described by Celik (1999) (Fig. 1). Mutlu et al. make no mention of these studies in their paper, despite the fact that Celik (1999) and Karakaya et al. (2001) have reported the most recent research on alunite ores/occurrences in Turkey and furthermore, presented much more detailed information about the occurrence of the alunite ores than Ozgenc (1993). The latter author did not report mineralogical and chemical analyses, the features of the various alteration types or the chemistry of the mineralized spring water related to the alunite occurrences or alteration minerals. The properties of the alunite deposits/occurrences and other alteration types were, however, investigated and explained in detail by Karakaya and Karakaya (2001 a,b). The latter authors did not discuss and compare the Saplica deposit to the Saphane alunite deposits because mineralogical and geochemical results from the latter are too scarce to allow for responsible comparison.
