Cleaner asphalt plants using new technology

A firm in California is now offering a system that it claims can cut odour-causing emissions produced as a byproduct during hot-mix asphalt production.The firm, Blue Smoke Control, is a division of Anaheim, California-based Butler-Justice. It says that its new X-VOCS system for eradicating invisible emissions from plants offers high efficiency.This technology addresses the odour-causing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that reside in hot asphalt storage tanks, which can present challenges for producers, ranging from regulatory requirements to overt opposition from neighbours.The X-VOCS System features proprietary carbon absorption technology that the firm claims is designed to filter and remove up to 9996 of odors and VOCs, such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S),from tanks. X-VOCS incorporates a five-stage filtration system. In the first three stages, a series of filters is said to remove more than 95% of targeted particulates down to 0.3 microns. In the final two stages, carbon filtration beds are claimed to remove remaining odours and volatiles.The X-VOCS system is said to be ideal for new plants, and also is easily retrofittable into existing operations, with minimal modifications to the plant.
