In order to take account of the demand for greater flexibility and scalability that is expected to play a crucial role in the future of vehicle manufacturing, developers are already at work on the development of more adaptable E/E architectures. When one considers the many updates and upgrades that will be necessary to secure a target service life of up to 15 years, it becomes clear that the development efforts will have to move away from static and toward dynamic systems. According to Continental, one way to achieve this goal is to develop an organized server and zone architecture with few server units to accommodate onboard vehicle functions. In the interview, Gerhard Becker of Edag describes the status quo in E/E architecture today and points out the main prerequisites that will have to be met for tomorrow’s self-driving vehicles. According to Becker, other important development topics include: the vital link between E/E architectures and vehicle control systems; testing and simulation; new hardware requirements; and system redundancy. The subject of connectivity represents another challenge for E/E architectures. In particular, the technology behind Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity has taken on ever greater significance. The capacity for an automatic, inter-vehicle sharing of information in real time offers attractive advantages in many areas.
