The core of modern vehicles and their assistance systems is not just formed by the sensors, but also a suitable computing architecture. In order to convert this from a distributed structure to a predominantly centralized architecture, it is necessary to merge the functions currently residing in numerous individual ECUs into an overarching server architecture while retaining all safety aspects such as redundancy. According to Nvidia, this development is made possible by increases in computing power. NXP is of the view that in addition to the topic of computing power required to process internal functions, fast gateways are also very important. This is especially true for data transfer and networking from the point of view of functional safety and ASIL D. The result will be a decisive role for new domain or zone-based vehicle architectures in the further development of vehicle functions. This will also present the option for vehicles to be constantly updated regarding functions using an archi tecture optimized for over-the-air updates – either in the area of Infotainment or even safetyrelevant functions.
