Identifying patients with cocaine-related chest pain at true risk for beta-blocker toxicity.

In the May 24, 2010, issue of the Archives, Rangel et al reported a retrospective study evaluating the apparent lack of an association between the use of beta-blockers (BBs) in chest pain patients with recent cocaine use and adverse effects. We thought it was a well-designed study with thoughtful comments and a justified conclusion that the use of "beta-blockers [in] patients with cocaine-associated chest pain appears to be safe and may even be beneficial."
