摘要

Many historians and the general public often considered the British Army during the First World War to be a stiff and unimaginative organization that sacrificed the best youth of England on the altar of dusty and ineffective military traditions. This book continues the slow but continual demolition of this inaccurate portrait carried out by historians in the past two decades. Focused on the adaptation to modem warfare, the investigation falls naturally on the difficult and slippery topic of military effectiveness, but Fox avoids dangerous quagmires. She concentrates on military innovation, effectively answering the question of whether the British Army was forward or backward thinking.
