This session focused on "Systems Biology," a relatively new concept in the field of radiation biology, which has been defined in several ways on www.biologydaily.com/ biology/Systems_thinking. Modern radiation biology has developed many techniques that make it possible to evaluate the response of molecules, cells, and tissues to low doses of radiation. Many of these techniques generate large databases. A major challenge that faces radiation biology is to be able to handle these large data sets to further our understanding of the mechanisms of action of radiation at different levels of biological organization from atoms to molecules, cells, tissues-organs, and the whole body.
