The MCART consortium animal models series: An evolving MCART

This second special issue of Health Physics, following the October 2012 issue, will focus on an additional model (radiation-induced lung injury) in the nonhuman primate (NHP), the refinement and validation of existing models, and an evolving Medical Countermeasures Against Radiological Threats (MCART) animal model research platform. Specific cores are being developed, and new emerging research tools will be used to gain new insights into radiation effects, medical countermeasure (MCM) efficacy, mechanisms of action, and biomarkers of organ-specific injury. Additionally, MCART has formed a team to link NHP and human radiation effects to extrapolate animal models to the human response to radiation and treatment.
