Current situation of patient centered care in environmental medicine in selected districts. Background: Environmental factors and their impact on health are often discussed in the context of health complaints although a causal association has not been proven yet. So far it is unclear how patient centered care is organized in environmental medicine (EM). Methods: Outpatient departments for EM, practitioners with specialization for EM and psychosomatic clinics were interviewed via telepho-ne regarding different topics in the context of environmental medicine. Results: Among all participants, a response rate of 11 % could be achieved. 35,4 % of all non-participating physicians stated that they do not work in the field of EM anymore. The rate of environmental patients varies: outpatient departments: 50 - 100 %; practitioners: < 25%; psychosomatic clinics: < 5 %. Patient centered care in the context of EM in specialized departments by respectively educated and specialized physicians was considered as “important” to “very important”. Perspective: Despite a potentially limited representativeness due to the small participation rate, there are Strong indications that for the improvement of a patient centered care in environmental medicine good Cooperation between all stakeholders is necessary. Further-more, environmental outpatient departments and continuing medical education in environmental medicine need to be empowered.
