India’s Ag Ministry cleared to use drones in insurance surveys

India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has received permission to deploy drones for capturing images of rice and wheat fields in 100 districts, reports news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). The nod comes from the country’s civil aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to assess crop yields at the village level under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme, PMFBY. The Ministry sought the clearance in November last year.
