Paramongaia weberbaueri

WHEN I FIRST received a bulb of Paramongaia weberbaueri by post, I was so excited that I was unable to handle it. A real rarity was in my hands. Since then, and after carefully following the growing instructions from the English nursery that suppliedit, every summer I have enjoyed the intoxicating scent of this giant Peruvian 'daffodil'. Paramongaia weberbaueri was described and named by Velarde-Nunez in 1949. In his paper he states that 'it thrives and flowers on the slopes of the coastal countiesof Supe, Paramonga (Pacar, Lupin) and Huarmey, just after the winter rainfall season has begun', where it is known by the vernacular names of 'amancae' and 'amancay'. He also mentions that in 1874, the first person to collect the plant and prepare the first herbarium specimen was Italian naturalist Antonio Raimondi (1824-1890), although he did so without formally naming it. He listed it merely as Ismene sp. inHerbario Raimondi.
