At a Westminster RHS flower show in December 1959, David McClintock staged an exhibit of lawn weeds. It did not receive any award, but it formed the basis of an article that D. McC. (as he was known, from the partially illegible squiggle that passed as his signature) published in the RHS Journal the following year:'Alien lawn weeds'. In anyone else's hands, such an exhibit would probably have offered advice about herbicides and the elimination of weeds from lawns; but the McClintock approach was different, concentrating on their identification, botany, and ecology.
