FAR TOO OFTEN Ficaria verna is considered a weed and maligned as being terribly rampant. There are, however, selections that do behave, particularly double-flowered cultivars. These tend not to produce any bulbils at the base of leaf stalks and they set very few seeds, if any. In this article I will give an overview of these double-flowered selections. Most will know this plant under its former name, Ranunculus ficaria. Several molecular studies have shown that this species is not closely enough related to Ranunculus, and it is therefore placed in its own genus as a single species. Tellingly, Ficaria was originally published as a separate genus in 1754.
