Destination Vietnam

When someone first mentioned to me that there were lots of hardy plants originating from northern Vietnam I must admit that I was rather surprised. My belief in this surprising assertion was strengthened when I read a series of articles by Keith Rushforth published by the RHS in Rhododendrons with Camellias andMagnoliasin 1999'.I then discovered that growing conditions at Logan Botanic Garden, where I work as Curator, are in many ways similar to those of northern Vietnam and that manyplants from this distant area may indeed thrive in the mild climate of southwest Scotland. With the intention of collecting plants to test this idea, I worked up a funding application, contacted fellow explorers, spoke to individuals who had visited thearea and continued my research into the diverse flora of the area.
