Strictly speaking, flying a drone for commercial uses is not entirely legal. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to blur the line with its Section 333 exemptions. FAA is granting case-by-case authorization for certain unmanned aircrafts to perform commercial operations prior to the finalization of the Small UAS Rule, which will be the primary method for authorizing small UAS operations upon its completion, estimated to come in 2016 or 2017. This past September, FAA issued its first six Section 333 exemptions based on requests facilitated by the Motion Picture Association of America. The first exemption approved for the agriculture industry came when Trimble was granted an exemption in December.
