The successor to the departing Chinese ambassador will have a number of major projects to finalise with the Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni but he will doubtless benefit from the warm relations that Zheng Zhuqiang has cultivated in Kampala. The Chinese president Xi Jinping has yet to announce his choice (and hence that of the National People's Congress) of a replacement for his representative in Uganda, Zheng Zhuqiang. On 13 April, the Africa- orientated diplomat is due to join Wu Peng, the former ambassador to Kenya who is now running the Africa department of the Chinese foreign ministry from Beijing. The arrival of his successor is eagerly awaited in Kampala, where Yoweri Museveni is hoping to capitalise on the excellent relations that he established with Zhuqiang. In late March, the two men struck a deal to export Nile fish to China - a project that the Ugandan president has been championing for several years.
