摘要

A common, repeated element of the barley genome, a 4.2-kb BamHI-fragment, was characterized. Considerable homology was found between this fragment and a copia-like BARE-1 retrotransposon previously studied. A unique distinction of the BamHI fragmentis its symmetrical structure, caused by the presence of 2 mutually inverted parts, each of which is homologous to a long region of BARE-1, including a 5'-LTR (long terminal repeat) and the adjacent leader sequence. No sequences homologous to the codingdomains of BARE-1 were revealed in the fragment. However, potentially functional signals such as TATA boxes and primer-binding sites exhibiting statistically significant homology to corresponding regulatory signals of known retroelements were found.
