Interspecific differences in structure of pericentromeric heterochromatin in ovarian trophocytes and evolution of malaria mosquitoes of the Anopheles maculipennis species complex.
Studies on polytene chromosomes of ovarian trophocytes in A. maculipennis, A. labranchiae, A. atroparvus, A. sacharovi, A. martinius, A. beklemishevi, A. subalpinus and A. messeae revealed significant variation in the structure of pericentromeric heterochromatin. Variations in the number and size of pericentromeric alpha-heterochromatin blocks, puffing and interaction with the nuclear envelope of beta-heterochromatin, and the degree of asynapsis between pericentromeric regions of homologues were detected. Interspecific differences are characteristic of all 3 chromosomes of Anopheles maculipennis and seem to be directly associated with systemic mutations determining speciation.
