Cytoplasmically inherited female-biased sex ratio in Kyrgyz population of Adalia bipunctata turanica caused by bacteria of the genus Rickettsia.
Some individuals of the Kyrgyz (Russia) population of the two-spot ladybird, A. b. turanica, were found producing exclusively or predominantly female progeny. The female-biased sex ratio was preserved in 5 studied generations and was maternally inherited. DNA analysis by polymerase chain reaction indicated that Rickettsia bacteria were responsible for the female-biased sex ratio in A. b. turanica.
