Discordance and cosegregation of halothane susceptibility and the 1843 C-T mutation at the RYR1 locus responsible for the ryanodine receptor in pigs.
The halothane test and PCR were used in 2 Siberian pig populations to determine the halothane susceptibility of the animals and to reveal a point mutation in the RYR1 gene respectively. No correlation was found between halothane susceptibility and the presence or absence of a point mutation at the RYR1 locus. However, changes in halothane susceptibility and the frequency of the mutation proved to be unidirectional in the 2 populations. The halothane-susceptible animals did not show hyperthermia, and changes in the frequencies of the Hal and RYR1 genes were similar. It is suggested that the porcine stress syndrome was under polygenic control in the populations studied.
