New three-stage bevel planetary gear unit for driving large vertical mills

A bevel planetary gear unit for driving vertical mills was first introduced by the German gear manufacturer RENK in 1979. The essential feature of that gear unit concept was the combination of a bevel gear stage with a planetary stage. Then in December 1999 the gear manufacturer from Augsburg presented the advanced concept of a three stage bevel planetary gear unit (one bevel gear stage, two planetary gear stages). This three-stage gear unit, which offers the operator a number of advantages and with the largest model for the time being can transmit an output torque of up to 3550 kNm, was developed to cope with the continuing trend towards large production units. The first gear unit of this new series, designated the KPBV190, was demonstrated at the end of last year to representatives of the cement industry and manufacturers of vertical mills during a test run. The gear unit had been ordered by Loesche GmbH of Dusseldorf. It is used for driving the world's largest vertical mill, an LM 63.4 Loesche mill, and is destined for an Argentinean cement works in Loma Negra. The gear unit was designed for a drive rating of 5400 kW, and a description is given here of its structural design.
